Taking an Active Role in Your Healthcare


Generally, we all have passion for something in life. There is that something that brings us joy or makes us feel like we’re doing something good or important; something that we are taking an active role in. Maybe it is your children’s after school activities, maybe you are an active leader in your community, or maybe you’re just the social butterfly of the community that keeps everyone informed on the latest news. Most of us have that “something” that we are involved in. So let us ask you, is your “something” your healthcare?

Now more than ever it is important to be involved in your healthcare decisions. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity are rising in numbers every day. Your health is your responsibility. We as your healthcare providers can help you maintenance your health but essentially you are the only one that can keep yourself healthy.

As a patient, you have three responsibilities:

  1. You need to take care of yourself.
  2. You need to report any changes in your health status to your healthcare provider.
  3. You need to have purpose in life. 

So how do you do these three simple tasks?

  1. Diet and exercise are important factors in overall health. You do not need to go to the gym every day and work up a sweat simply do more and eat less.
  2. Go for a walk – if the weather is bad walk laps around the inside of your house. If your one that fills your plate full – cut it in half. Use a smaller plate and do not let your food touch each other. Remember when our mothers would drill into us to always clean our plates? It is not necessary, when you are full stop. Make sure you are allowing yourself enough rest time. We have busy lives; sometimes we forget to just take time to rest.
  3. If you notice differences in your health, report it to your physician. You can simply call the office and have a receptionist leave a message for your provider. They can then decide if they need you to come in the office for a visit or if they can address it over the phone with you.
  4. Find your joy in life!
  • When do you feel that your life if the most meaningful?
  • What are you good at? What are your talents and what come naturally?
  • What do you enjoy doing the most?
  • What are your priorities?
  • What is important to you?
  • When do you find you are the happiest at what you are doing?

Only you can answer these questions and only you can take the steps to better healthcare. Remember, we as your healthcare providers cannot do these steps for you but we will be here to help you along the way.
